Cleopatra’s family ruled over Egypt for more than 100 years before she was born in 69 B.C. Myths and stories involving Cleopatra’s life inspired many movies, plays, and books, including â€Å"Antony and Cleopatra† by Shakespeare. She has become on of the most popular ancient Egyptian queens. (Biography.com, ) Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator, the last queen of Egypt, was born in about 69 B.C. The large line of rulers that ruled over Egypt started in about 32 B.C. After the death of Alexander the Great the next era begun when Alexander’s general, Ptolemy, took over as king of Egypt. In the next three centuries, his family would follow in his footsteps. In its largest times, Ptolemaic, Egypt, was one of the world’s largest powers. (Biography.com, ) Cleopatra’s dad was King Ptolemy XII. Her mom was not well known, but some say she was her father’s sister. It was believed for a long time that Cleopatra was Greek, but a lot of people think she might have been part African. (History.com staff, 2009) Soon after, power complications started to happen between Cleopatra and her brother, Ptolemy XIII. While this was in play, Cleopatra fled to Syria, where she put together an army to defeat her rival in order to declare the throne to herself to â€Å"solve† the power issues. She returned to Egypt with an army and faced her brother at Pelusium (a coliseum-type place) located on the empire’s eastern edge.
